Choosing a Quality Butterfly Knife:

Butterfly knives are one of the most collectible knives in America, due to their form factor and composition. They are more than just a switchblade and since they contain no springs or other moving parts aside from the force of gravity to open them, they are considered elegant and graceful. Butterfly knives are also known as a balisong, which originated in the Philippines where they are still used today as part of a Filipino martial arts practice known as eskrima.

There are several different types and styles of the butterfly knife, but all of these styles fall into two categories of knife. They are either sandwich construction, or channel construction. The type of construction that is used will determine the quality, with channel construction blades being prized for their sturdy pins and ability to withstand great pressure. Most cheaper blades will be of sandwich construction, which is not as durable, though it does allow for a cheaper price.

Determining the Quality of a Blade

If you are considering purchasing a butterfly knife based on quality, there are a few important points you should consider. True balisongs are not spring assisted knives, so if the knife you are considering has listed this as a feature, then it is not a true balisong in the sense of the original design.

Most blades that are of any quality are produced under the product name Benchmade, so look for this if you are at a knife and gun show. Most Benchmade balisongs feature a stainless steel blade with steel handles, designed for ease of opening and closing, but also for comfort grip while held in the hand either opened or closed. Benchmade does produce a few spring assisted knives under their title, but these are not true balisongs for those looking to collect this type of knife.

Typically, any model of Benchmade knife will run you around $200 or more, due to the high quality materials that are used in creating it. The pins that hold the two handles into the tang of the knife are exceptionally well made, which is one reason many people prefer this type of butterfly knife to any others on the market.

Cheaper Knives & Their Prices

If you are not after a knife for the quality, but for the looks, there are plenty of cheaper alternatives. These are usually not made from stainless steel but a lower grade of steel that is prone to rust, so they must be given extra care compared to the higher dollar counterparts. These knives are also usually of sandwich construction, meaning the blade and two handles are crafted completely separately instead of the handles being carved from the same piece of steel.

These cheaper knives are often imports from places like China, Japan, and the Philippines. The price depends on the materials that are used, but often since lower carbon steel is used for both the blade and the handle, you should not expect to pay more than $50 for a cheaper import of the blade.

Are They Legal?

Because of its status as a concealed weapon, many states in the United States have a ban on what they consider spring loaded or gravity assisted knives. Any type of knife with a blade that is concealable is banned in California, while other states allow the blade to be owned so long as it is kept in the home. Laws are a little bit different outside of the United States and much more harsh.

In places like Australia and Germany, the weapon has been considered a threat and requires a special permit to own one even in the privacy of your own home. Germany is much stricter than other places such as the UK and Canada where the knife is also prohibited. Buying or selling a knife in Germany can result in a fine of up to 10,000 Euros as well as up to five years in prison, which is a hefty fine for such a small infraction. If you are considering purchasing a knife of this caliber, you should determine your local laws before purchasing so you can be sure you are within them and prevent yourself from knowingly committing a crime.

Collecting balisongs for show is a hobby many people engage in and they are perhaps the most common knife you will see outside of Bowie knives at a gun and knife show. Since they are considered collectibles, knowing a bit about the make and manufacture of these knives can net you a decent collection.

A knife has a sharp edge and it usually has a handle. Knives have been used million years ago and were proved by the Oldowan tools. Originally a knife is made out of rocks, obsidian or flint. A knife can be a tool, utensil, weapon or an item used in cultural events. A knife is can either be folded or is a fixed based that has different styles for different uses. This can also be a custom made, depending on your preference. Today knives have different styles, uses and materials. One good example is the butterfly pocket knives or the butterfly knife.

Butterfly pocket knife

A knife is handy, especially with the butterfly knife because it is convenient in outdoor events like camping. This is sharp, safe and durable compared to knives that are not sharp and needs to have more force that can cause unwanted accidents.

There are plenty of knives that you can choose from but the common and popular knife for camping is the butterfly pocket knife which is applicable when cooking outdoors. It is usually made out of stainless steel and can be used in cutting food like vegetables, meat and many more. One best seller pocket knife online costs $34.99 there are thirty knives all in all with this kind of set but the price can also range from $0.01as seen at Amazon site, this kind of knife has a thick blade and also made out of stainless steel. These two examples of pocket knives are definitely handy in camping bags, but if you prefer having an expensive and much more sophisticated knives for camping, there is a $999 knives (or that costs more), but is not ideal to bring in camping trips because it is heavy. It is sensible to bring these camping knives if you have the means of transportation.

This can also be used as a weapon, especially when you are in the forest and instances like a wild animal attack can be the right time to use the butterfly knife or it can be just a tool used for self defense from elements. It takes skills to master a move or a technique with the butterfly knife. There are workshops for this kind of self defense and there are a lot of websites that you can review with regards to defending yourself with a butterfly knife.

There are plenty of uses with this kind of knife. Review or canvass on websites that could help you become more knowledgeable concerning butterfly knives. You can search with keywords such as butterfly knife tricks, butterfly knives and many more.

Popular websites

888 knives rus, brass knuckles company, blade empire, blade play, blade ops and many more.

So like a lot of ancient things its not 100 % of the Butterfly Knife original came from the Philippines or from the French. There a recording in 1710 French book “Le Perret” were they talk about Butterfly Knive and how they were created in the 1500’s area. If you’re to talk with a Filipino they will tell you that the (Bailsong) also known as the Butterfly Knive was created back in 800 AD. Like I said before there is know true way to find out for sure, all we have is the records and story that come with them. The word Bailsong is a city in the Philippines were they make Butterfly Knives. We do know that this Knife was used as a weapon during WWII (1945). When our troops were going threw all the islands they came across the Butterfly Knife and found them intriguing and brought them back to the States. A Knife like this was intriguing yet complex in design and usefulness. To see someone operate it for the first time is confusing yet exciting because you want to try and open it, but fill a little intimidated just because it’s a Knife and who wants to twirl a Knife around like that. The troops had never seen such Knives like this it was not their traditional Knife.

If you’re in the market today for a Butterfly Knive you will want to know that there are two types made. The first one is the Sandwich construction and considered the weaker of the two, all the parts are screwed or pin together, you can adjust the pivot pins to tighten or loosen for maneuverability, and the blade rest between the layers, which is why they call it the sandwich version. The other construction is called a Channel Knife, now all the parts are machined and constructed with one peace for each handle, like I said this version is considered much stronger. I have always been interested and collected Knives since I was a teenager, and the Butterfly Knives was one of my favorite Knives to have. I would sit in my room for hours practicing opening it, and would always try to do it faster and faster just like the guys on TV, maybe not a good idea when you’re a kid. Like most young boys anything to do with martial arts was interesting and the Butterfly Knife was truly on of those interests for me and still is today.

I look for every opportunity to talk to another knife collector and see what they have and how long they have been a collector. Just like another hobbies knife collecting has its own language and stereo types, if you have a minute take a look at one of my other sites were I talk more about the history of knives @ http://www.articledashboard.com/Article/History-Of-Butterfly-Knives/1202545 I am sure you will enjoy it.

I have been talking about the Butterfly Knife and how intriguing and complex the design is and how I fill its one of my most favorite Knife to have and also play with, Yea I have Throwing Knives and every once in a while me and my buddies will get a log out and have a little compaction but my Butterfly Knife is just fun to sit and practice tricks to try and impress people. Collection Knives is a way of life just like collection Dolls are for women. We each have our thing that were really into and love, and when that person talks about what they love you can see them light up. Its funny when I talk to my wife about when I was a kid and thought I was a Ninja and would try and act like them and use all my cool martial art weapons I had, she just thinks I am funny and a little crazy, she’s right I am funny anyhow my whole goal was to just talk to you about something that I truly care about and think is very informative.

If you decide to get a Knife one day and I don’t care if its any Knife take the time to really look at it, and study the design and think about the work that went into that. I use to take a blank peace of steel and look at it and then watch my buddy make some of the coolest Knives out of the one blank peace of steel. You have to be a master sculpture to get the shape on the contours and that fine blade finish, not mentioning sharper than hell. I just wanted to take a minute again and talk about safety when it comes to using a Knife. If your not experience then make sure and take some time and look at some of the hazards of using or playing with Knives. I enjoy just as much as the next guy but I have also made sure I am aware of my surroundings and how to use them properly, obviously much better now then when I was a young boy and almost stabbing my sister and even the do once but we don’t need to talk about that. O yea that also made me remember a story about me and my sister and me making her made and her picking up one of my Knives and trying to stab me but again that’s for another website maybe something around family consoling. Thank you for taking the time to read and look at my site please drop me a line if you have any question….

So when you think about wholesale butterfly knives you think cheap knives. Well you’re right in one aspect and wrong in the other. What I mean by that is wholesale butterfly knives is a great source if you’re in the market to resell, or have a website selling butterfly knives. I was in the wholesale business for many years in another industry. Back when EBay really started to take off, I was in with a company that sold wholesale direct from China on just about anything you could think of. I was able to get in on this deal for next to nothing, and within a short amount of time and effort I was well on my way to making really good money. As like most good things that are too good to be true it ran its course, and I have moved on to other things in my life.

When I started really looking at butterfly knife I realized that this is something that I have always been excited to be around. A butterfly knife is a great item to collect, and also use. I have said it many times before but when I started collecting knives as a teenager I really knew this was something that I would be into the rest of my life, and when I received that first butterfly knife I was so excited to be able to try it out like the guy on T.V. Obviously has time goes you grow up but never lose that childlike enthusiasm for something your patient about.

So if you’re in the market for wholesale butterfly knives then here a few rules you want to go by.

Rule #1: Have a business plan in mind; always know what your objectives are, and where you want to be in six months of starting up your business. I made the mistake of starting off without really any experience, and it cost me a lot of money at first till I meet a guy who was able to help me get back on track.

Rule #2: Find a knife broker, you can just Google knife broker, and you will get a list of them. The question you want to ask them is what brand name knives you can expect to be getting. Obviously if they tell you something like Buck knives then you know that it better not say made in China on there, because there out of Idaho. What I like to do is get a couple of there clients email if at all possible, and just shoot them a line and see how happy they are with the service.

Rule #3: This is the final rule and one of the most important; always have a backup plan for whatever you do. If you find a broker to help you get your knives, then make sure you have a plan B if they fail to deliver. Always know where you’re able to get rid of your merchandise so you’re not stuck if you hit a dry spell. Good planning always pays off in the end, versus just jumping right into it.

I started collected knives when I was a teenager, and when I was able to buy my first butterfly knife by my self I looked at Benchmade Butterfly Knives. I knew I was getting a quality knife, and I would be able to have good resell value if needed. Benchmade Knives have been around for over 20 years now, and you know your getting a quality made knife when you purchase a Benchmade. I had a couple of butterfly knives that I received from the swap-meet. When I bought my first butterfly knife it was a Benchmade Butterfly Knife, and let me tell you are able to fill the difference. I like to be able to practice my tricks with the knives which I have been working on for years know and still need more practice. When I was growing up I did a lot of damage in my room by putting holes in the walls from the knife slipping out of my hand.

When I put my cheap butterfly knife next to my Benchmade Butterfly Knives you could see the quality difference in the steel, and other components of the knife. It was noticeably heaver, the blade operation was much smother, and the lock mechanism felt like it would keep it closed. Unlike my cheap butterfly knife that would come open in my pocket if I was running or something, so I always had to be careful.

Benchmade started making knives in the early 1980’s, and like most knife makers they get their start out in their garage with a cold peace of steel and a grinder. Making a knife takes some skill and artistic side to be able to come up with the design and have it work like a knife is design to do. Benchmade Knives are made with the end-user in mind, they take the time and effort to build a knife that will stand the test of time. I have had my first Benchmade Knife for over 15 years now, and it still looks brand new. I have used it for hunting, and other task and it has always stood up to what ever I threw at it. When Benchmade moved to Organ I was bummed out because I lived in California at the time and wanted to go take a tour were they make the knives. Now that I live in Idaho I am thinking about making a trip up there this summer, and take a look around. I am always impressed to see how the knives are made, and the effort that goes into making the handles out of a peer peace of wood.

I have people ask me all the time why are butterfly knives illegal, and I always wonder why they ask that question. If you have been around knives, or have ever collected knives you know any type of knife that’s concerted a deadly weapon, and opens and closed like a butterfly knife, or a switchblade is considered illegal to carry. Trust me as a collector I love having and carrying my knives but it’s not worth getting them confiscated and fined just because I want to carry it with me.

If you want to buy butterfly knives then you want to take a look at 888knives they have a great selection of butterfly knives. When I first started my collection I was not sure who to really deal with, and of course I only had my local swap meet which were all China knock off’s. I told a story of a buddy of mine who went to buy butterfly knives, and he was not really up to date on what to look for or what questions to ask. So he ended up with a $600 dollar butterfly knife that was worth $25.00 at best. So make sure you’re getting a good deal when the guy is telling you that.

To go out and buy butterfly knives is not the smartest thing to do. I like to wait for a gun show or something like that; I always find good deals, and true collectors who have the good choices. I am not a big fan of broker knives either just because you’re not sure what you’re getting; only what someone is telling you. So unless you trust a broker to purchase your knives, try to do all the work your self. Plus I find it’s more fulfilling to go out, and find those hidden treasures. I use to buy butterfly knives from a broker for a little while and I got a few good ones but overall I missed going to the trade shows, and looking for them my self.

The one question I get a lot is are butterfly knives illegal, and yes they are for the most part but each state has its own laws so you want to make sure, and find out how they fill about someone carrying a butterfly knife. I have had run in with the law, and had a knife on me and they try and give me a hard time, but if your cool with them, and show them respect they usually will let you go with a warning. So again if your going to buy butterfly knives then make sure you ask the right questions, and you spend some time looking around for the best deal. I don’t want anyone to end up like my buddy Brain, and be out $600.00 for nothing. Please fill free to drop me a line and let me know your thoughts, and also tell me about your knife collection, I always like to here about other collectors out there.

Survival knives come in different shapes and sizes but if you are looking for the best survival knives look for ones that are made out of stainless steel or D2 steel. Apart from the material, you also have to consider the brand and the country the knife is coming from. Quality is everything so be sure that the knife you buy is something that will actually last for a very long time.

There are many survival knives for sale online. In fact, you can even get military survival knives at real cheap prices. However, how do you choose which one is best? When it comes right down to the nitty gritty, military survival knives should have grooves and holes in their handles and should not conduct electricity. A particular story about an American soldier in Iraq has been cited many times and this story is not something about politics, it is about the knife that saved this soldier’s life.

Army SFC Dillard Johnson and a comrade were pinned down in a building due to Iraqi insurgent gunfire. With only the darkness as their cover, the insurgents inside the building decided to turn on the lights to illuminate the position of the soldiers. Thankfully, Johnson had his survival knife with him, this knife in particular had an insulated handle allowing the soldier to disable the lights by cutting two 220 volt cords without being electrocuted.

Johnson’s story is somehow an inspiration to knife enthusiasts because it gives them more reason to find the best combat knife available in the market today.

Aside from a knife with a good handle, what else should buyers pay attention too when looking for a combat knife? Knives with superior materials are usually the best. If you get one that is cheap and is made out of relatively cheap materials as well, this knife will not last long and may even dull quickly. Quality and function should always be merged when looking for a good combat knife.

For those looking for cheap survival knives, it would be best to browse for knives in different websites to get the best deals. The best advise that knife hunters would give you however is to look for the best knife and not letting the price tag decide for you.

For those who want custom survival knives, there are many shops both online and offline that make custom-made knives. Customers even have the choice of getting their names engraved on their knives through these shops. Knives that are custom made can be passed on from one generation to another. A good combat knife is something you can always rely on. Whether you like knives that have wooden handles or ones that are made out purely of sturdy D2 steel, you should make sure that your knife is rust resistant.

Some knives may look real good like the ones they use in the movies but do not be deceived by these knives and do not buy them. Usually they only look good but are not very effective when it comes right down to it.

What defines survival knives, well I guess that depends on what type of situation you’re in. When I first think of a survival knife I think about the movie Rambo. You have an x member of the military who was a trained green bray, and you put him out in a jungle with some weapons and his survival knives. One of the most impressive parts of that movie for me was when he was injured, and he pulled out his cool survival knife and unscrewed the end cap, and pulled out a sowing kit.

If I was hurt out in the jungle, and had to do stitches on my self not sure how I would take that but Rambo keep his cool and just made having survival knives look really cool. Survival knives can be used just for what there title says survival, so if you need to wider a tree limb to make a sphere to kill something, or cut up some wood to start a fire. I guess if you’re really thinking about survival a knife of this caliber is definitely something you want to have on hand. I think we all have a little survival tactics in us.

Speaking of survival knives I have a buddy that loves to go out and hunt, and he thinks he really cool because he just brings the bear necessity for survival. He has a gun with ammo, his hunting knife, and also what he calls his survival knife. Brian is just really trying to be like the guy on T.V were he gets drop off in the middle of know were, and has to survive. When he comes home he always has some crazy story of all the crazy thins he went threw, not sure if there true or not but they are pretty interesting. One story he told me was when it was pretty close spring time and it look like we were going to be getting a lot of rain that weekend but Brian still wanted to head out, and get to good use out of his survival skills. After being drop off like normal he finds a place to bed down for the night. Once he found a spot he likes he then starts to use his survival knife and cuts up tree limbs and lots of covering to make a sleeping cotters. I guess during this process he keep hearing some weird noises in and around were he was but just keep working. Once he had his sleeping cotters all set he then starts his fire, and heads out looking for something to kill and eat. Like I said he really goes overboard with this whole survival thing. When he was out looking for his dinner he realized what he was hearing was a wolf pack that was not to far away. Now this has been a big problem around the local mountains so he had to rethink his survival tactics knowing that he could be in over his head, and I think for the first time he did the right thing and get to were he could get a phone single because I guess he always had his satellite phone with just in case. So the moral of the story is, you can be cool and have survival knives, and think you’re all prepared but you also have to use some common sense.

What defines cool butterfly knives, well I guess that’s up to who you’re asking. Cool butterfly knives are all cool to me; I like the cheap ones just as much as the expensive ones. Sometimes I like the cheap ones better, one because you don’t have to be as careful with them like you do with one that cost $2000.00, and you don’t fill bad when you drop it on the ground while trying to show off. I became a collector when I was a kid so all knives were cool to me; it did not matter if it was a hunting knife, or a throwing knife, or even a standard Buck knife. I just thought all knives were really cool and interesting to play with. If you’re a gun collector you know what I mean when I say I can sit there and stare at the design and the beauty of the knife just like gun collectors do with there’s. I think people get into collecting because they can find peace and enjoyment in the beauty of what they really like. Look at a train collector and those elaborate train towns they build. That’s a lot of work and time and money, yet they do it because they love it.

Cool butterfly knives are cool to who ever thinks they are. I am not for these guys who think their better than other at the gun shows. You go by the guys booths and they just seem like snobs, and they are superior to everyone else there. I really have a hard time being around. When what you’re into becomes a choir or politics get into it, then it just is not fun anymore. I have a son know and it’s my hopes and dreams to get him into collection just like me, and he would pass it on to his son. My step father was the one who got me into it, and I have had a lot of joy out of it, and I would like to pass that same joy onto my son. If you’re considering taking up knife collection go around to some of the trade shows, and gun shows you will learn a lot and also meet a really great bunch of people. I have met some of my best friends at these events, and know I have someone else to share it with, till my son gets a little older.

A butterfly knife is a butterfly knife; you have the two handles, the blade, the latch, and the components that hold all that together. Now when you think of different types of butterfly knives you have to think of design, and what type of material that is being used to make it. Let’s talk about the handles; you can get them in just about any type of material from aluminum to alloy steel, and also titanium. The key to getting and making the right handle is to make it light weight but also strong to whit stand the pressure of your hand when using it. Now the blade on the other hand is a different story, you want to get very strong steel, preferably ATS33 which is some of the best. You’re able to get this imported from China but you will pay a pretty penny for it. What’s good about this type of steel is the fact that you can shape and mold it to the design you want, and when you sharpen it you don’t have to worry about it getting dual or denting like mild or cheap steel normally wood.

When you think of different types of butterfly knives you can spend anywhere from $20.00 up to $2000.00 dollars just depends how much, and what your limits are. I have come across three types of butterfly knives; first you have your cheap swap meet special that uses nothing but low grade components. Second you have you mid range with good handles and a mild steel blade, and cheap hardware. Third you have your top of the line, high quality everything even the little micro titanium roller bearing for the blade, now you know your spending some big bucks. I have five different types of butterfly knives, ranging from cheap to very expensive. There are some very expensive butterfly knives out there but those are for the true knife collector, and I wound not recommend spending that kind of money unless you know what to look for, and also what questions to ask. I have told a story of a buddy of mine who bought one on his own and to make a long story short he was taken for about $800.00 on a swap meet special, I still tease him to this day. At least next time he will listen and take me with him before he goes out and waist that kind of money.

If you’re in the market for expensive butterfly knives then you want to go custom made for sure. A custom butterfly knife can run you anywhere from $200.00 up to $2000.00 depending on who makes it. I still remember when I bought my first real good Knife, and man was I wandering if I was getting a good deal. The gentleman who was selling it wanted $350.00 for it, and he made it himself but I was not sure of how to judge the quality, and also the material used. After that purchase I realized if I truly wanted to collect butterfly knives I needed to do a little homework. I would recommend if your wanting to be a collector in any field you definitely want to understand, and know all the ends and out of that niche. I have been pretty lucky up to this point where all my purchased either have gone up in value or have held their own.

I wanted to tell you about a buddy of mine who thought he was going to start collecting knives as a hobby. He would come around and look at my collection, and decided one day he was going to do the same thing. So he asks for a few pointers and what to look for, and was on his way to go out and buy some knives. I ask him if he would like for me to be with him, and he agreed to let me be a part. So Brian took a trip down too Las Vegas for some convention for work, and while he was down their, he came across a hunting and fishing outdoor event. To make a long story short he ended up talking to this guy at one of the booths about becoming a knife collector, and what type of butterfly knives did he have. Well of course the guy realizing that this guy was a rookie, and had no idea what was a good knife from a bad one. I guess he pulled one out of the box, and told him this is my most expensive butterfly knives that I have. So of course Brain not realizing that he is about to be hustled ask how much. It was $600.00 and like a dummy he bought it thinking he was going to come back, and show me up. So he pulls it out and shows me, and I had to laugh and then told him he took your money silly. I pulled a knife out of my collection that was an identical too what he had, and ask him how much do you think I paid for this knife? Yea I paid $40.00 at the swap meet, he about feel out of his chair. The moral of this story is, if your going to buy something that is suppose to be of value then make sure it is. So I gave him crap and then told him next time stick to the plan so we can get his collection going in the right direction.
